The brief

A generic template for a very specific job.

Barry has thirty years inside defense and intelligence programs and an active TS/SCI clearance. He works as a fractional CTO for defense tech startups.

His site was a template on a site builder. It looked like anyone's.

For most businesses, generic is a missed opportunity. For someone selling judgment to founders with government contracts on the line, it works against him.

Nobody lands on this site by accident.

Barry's work isn't something people search for and stumble into. Almost everyone who visits has already heard his name, from an investor, a colleague or a program office, and they've come to check him out.

That changes what the site is for. It isn't discovery, it's verification. And it wasn't doing that. The about section barely existed, so thirty years of experience never made it onto the page. What he actually offers wasn't clear either.

Build for someone who is already interested.

I organised everything around the question a visitor actually arrives with: is this person who I was told he is?

Credibility comes first. The clearance, the agencies, the thirty years, the credentials, stated plainly and early instead of buried in an about page. Then the offer, in language a founder can act on.

The funnel has one destination, which is a call, and every section points at it.

Barry wanted downloadable documents, and that turned out to be the sharpest idea in the brief. Someone researching quietly isn't ready to book, but they will take a capability statement. So downloads ask for a name and an email. He gets a list of who's looking and can follow up himself, and the visitor gets something useful without committing to anything.

One page, because one page was what he needed. We talked about more pages later, and about a proper library once there are more than two documents. Building either now would have been building for a business he doesn't have yet.

The outcome

A site that holds up under checking.

Someone who has heard Barry's name can land, confirm he's real, understand what he does, and either book a call or take a document with them. He knows who's reading.
